Ed Hearn came to the Royals in 1987, playing a total of 13 games for Kansas City before a shoulder injury forced him to retire in '88. When a kidney disorder threatened his life, he hit rock bottom -- but found a way to look past the bad, giving motivational speeches and founding a nonprofit corporation called the Bottom of the Ninth.
