The Mets- Phils at Shea wasn’t the only big game in town tonight. Over in Brooklyn the Cyclones started a “do or die” two game series with the Aberdeen Ironbirds. Going into tonight’s game Brooklyn held a slim 1/2 game lead over the Jamestown Jammers for the Wild Card.
Unfortunately for the Cyclones the lost 5-3 in 11 innings and were eliminated from the playoffs after the Jammers swept a doubleheader. Jamestown is now a game ahead and owns all the tie breakers going into the final game of the season. On Monday, Patrick Hickey Jr. of the popular Cyclones blog Dem Brooklyn Bums will join me at 6pm to recap the season.
The Trenton Thunder contined to role, as our very own Joe Delgrippo predicted, by beating the Portland Sea Dogs 5-4 to sweep the best of five series in three games. Kevin “Wild Thing Rickey Vaughn” Whelan struck out five of six batters in relief to secure the win. If you haven’t seen some of Joe Delgrippo’s reports head over to our Yankees Minors section and check it out.
In Scranton, the Yankees took a 2-1 lead in their series with Pawtucket beating the Sox 6-4. Kei Igawa got the win with seven strong innings and Scott Strickland, formerly of the Mets, picked up the save.
How ironic that both Yankees minor league affiliates are battling the Red Sox while the major league team is playing out the string?
