The Carolina Panthers ended three weeks of “summer school” practices Thursday. After coach John Fox called off a fourth week of “organized team activities,” the team won't convene again until July25 in Spartanburg for training camp.
While Fox had his eyes on everything, there were a few spots he paid particular attention to during the OTAs. Here are a few of them and how the Panthers are set up heading into camp:
Quarterback Jake Delhomme's arm
The issue: Delhomme had Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm in October and missed most of the 2007 season.
Resolution: Delhomme practiced with the first-team offense during OTAs and said the arm feels as strong as ever.
Reality: It likely won't be until Delhomme plays in an actual game – with defenders slapping and tugging at his arm – that he knows how sound it actually is.
Quote: “Will I have a pitch count in camp? I'm sure I will, because it will be the smart thing to do.” – Delhomme.
Revamping the offensive line
The issue: The Panthers' offense struggled in '07, finishing 29th in the NFL in total offense.
Resolution: The team took tackle Jeff Otah in the first round of the draft, picked up some free-agent guards, then shifted Jordan Gross to left tackle, Travelle Wharton to left guard and Ryan Kalil to center. Several offensive linemen gained weight to make them more effective blockers.
Reality: Otah seems to already have been installed as the starter at right tackle and free-agent pickup Toniu Fonoti (a former Pro Bowler) looked impressive at right guard during OTAs.
Quote: “We made a conscious effort to get bigger up there, but we will get a truer idea of that when we get into pads.” – Fox.
Establishing a run-first mentality
The issue: Fox wants the offense to again center on a punishing rushing attack.
Resolution: The Panthers cut DeShaun Foster and drafted Jonathan Stewart in the first round. The hope is Stewart's physical style will form a strong counter to DeAngelo Williams' speed and elusiveness.
Reality: Stewart is recovering from a toe injury and hasn't practiced. But he's out of a protective boot and Fox said he expects him to be ready for training camp.
Quote: “I don't think (Stewart) will have a problem once he actually gets here and gets used to the speed of the game.” – Williams.
Finding a complement to Steve Smith
The issue: Smith was the Panthers' only legitimate receiving threat last season.
Resolution: The Panthers brought back Muhsin Muhammad from Chicago (where he played for three seasons after nine years in Carolina) and signed free agent D.J. Hackett.
Reality: Muhammad and Hackett both had strong OTAs and Dwayne Jarrett (a disappointment as a rookie) showed improvement.
Quote: “The success of the core is really important. If there's only one guy doing the work, it would be easy to defend that type of offense. Once you have a lot of unity and harmony in the core, you work better together.” – Muhammad.
Rediscovering Julius Peppers
The issue: Peppers, once one of the NFL's dominant defensive ends, had just 2.5 sacks last season.
Resolution: With Mike Rucker retired, Peppers might switch from left to right end (where he played in college).
Reality: Although Peppers might be more comfortable on the right side, that means he'll often face an opponent's left tackle – usually a team's best offensive lineman.
Quote: “We do a lot of things in the offseason, offensively and defensively. He might go back to left, but I can't answer that. He's a more natural left-handed stance guy.” – Fox.
